Letters from the Studio: A Year of Handwoven Stories | TibetanTwist

There is a corner of our studio where morning light hits the workbench first. Spools of waxed cord in peony pink, pine green, and monsoon sky blue sit in glass jars. Half-finished bracelets hang from a wooden rack. Dried lavender from last summer still scents the air. This is where every piece of TibetanTwist handwoven jewelry begins — not on a screen, not in a mold, but between our hands, one knot at a time.
A year ago, we started with a simple idea: that color could be drawn from real gardens, that knots could hold meaning, and that no two pieces should ever look the same. Today, we want to take you behind the knots and share what this first year has taught us about slow-made artisan jewelry.
The Workbench Is Where Color Becomes Real
Every morning, we choose threads the way a painter chooses pigments. We do not work from Pantone cards. We work from memory — the coral of a poppy in late June, the indigo of a monsoon sky before rain, the oxblood red of autumn leaves pressed between notebook pages.

The palette for each collection starts outside. We photograph flowers, collect seed pods, and press leaves. Then we match waxed cord colors to those natural hues, twisting two or three shades together until the thread holds the same warmth as the original bloom. This is why our botanical-inspired jewelry never looks flat. The colors carry the irregularity of nature — a little darker here, a little brighter there, always alive.
Our workbench is covered in small wooden dishes holding brass findings, raw stones, and dried botanicals. Nothing is arranged by machine. We lay components out by hand, moving pieces until the composition feels right. Sometimes that takes ten minutes. Sometimes it takes an hour. Speed is not the goal. The goal is a piece that feels like it grew rather than was made.
Why No Two Pieces Are Ever Alike
People often ask how we keep our handwoven jewelry consistent. The honest answer is: we do not try to. Consistency is the language of factories. Our language is variation.

When we knot a bracelet, the tension in our fingers shifts with the humidity, the time of day, even the music playing in the studio. Two bracelets made from the same color recipe on the same afternoon will still differ slightly — one knot a millimeter higher, one twist a fraction tighter. These are not flaws. They are fingerprints. They are the proof that a real pair of hands touched every thread.
We also work in small batches. A single design might see only eight or twelve pieces before we move to a new color story. This means that when you choose a piece from our collection, you are not buying a mass-produced item. You are choosing something made by hand, one at a time, in a limited run that will not be repeated exactly.
That is the heart of artisan jewelry. Not perfection. Presence.
The Knots That Hold Our First Year Together
Looking back at twelve months of work, certain knots stand out like landmarks. The first time we successfully twisted three colors into a single cord without tangling. The afternoon we realized that pine green and cream together looked like moss on old stone. The rainy day when a customer wrote to say her bracelet reminded her of her grandmother’s garden.

These moments do not show up in product photos, but they live in the pieces. Every knot carries the day it was made. That is why we call this handwoven jewelry rather than simply handmade. The weaving — the interlacing of threads, the crossing of colors, the repetition of small gestures — is what turns material into memory.
Our first year has also taught us about materials. We chose waxed cord because it ages beautifully. It softens with wear, darkens slightly where it touches skin, and develops a patina that tells the story of the person wearing it. Unlike metal chains that stay unchanged, waxed cord becomes personal over time. It records your days the way a notebook records your thoughts.
Which Story Will You Wear?
If you are new to TibetanTwist, welcome. If you have been with us since the first month, thank you. Either way, we believe choosing a piece of handwoven jewelry should feel like choosing a story you want to carry.
Browse our colorful handmade jewelry collections to find the palette that speaks to you. If you are drawn to earth tones and quiet greens, our botanical-inspired bracelets weave together threads that echo real leaves and stems. For those who love deeper, richer hues, our oxblood-and-cream handwoven pieces carry the warmth of late autumn afternoons.
Not sure where to start? Look at your own surroundings. The colors you already live with — the flowers on your windowsill, the scarf you reach for most often, the photograph you keep on your desk — are clues. We design every collection so that there is a thread waiting to match your world.
Nature, woven by hand. Color, woven into stories.
